How To Wear Neutrals

The best compliment you can give me is to call me the queen of neutrals! My closet is full of them and I think they’re just so elegant. You can build your wardrobe full of staple neutral pieces so that your outfit options are endless. Right now, the “it” neutral color is camel. But, you’re probably familiar with the classics like white, beige, black, and of course, leopard print. Today’s post breaks down how to wear neutrals, no matter which color or season it is.

How To Wear Neutrals

Some people love wearing color and others love neutrals. I am the latter! I just love a minimalist look and a clean, classic vibe when it comes to getting dressed. But, wearing neutrals doesn’t need to be boring! There are plenty of ways to jazz up your outfits even if they’re monochromatic. Below I’m sharing my tips for wearing neutrals, as well as some of my favorite neutral outfits I style regularly.

Tips for Wearing Neutral Colors

When it comes to wearing neutrals, I have a ton of tips. Below are my top three.

Shoe colors that work best with neutral outfits

In keeping with the theme, I normally stick to neutral shoes with my neutral outfits. This means nude heels or black flats mostly. Between these two, they pretty much go with anything! Don’t stress about matching colors to a tee. As long as you’re in the same color family, you’ll look great! Want a little color? More on that below.

Add a pops of color

Most times I’ll keep my outfit neutral and then add a pop of color with my shoes! It keeps your outfit polished but also makes it more fun! My go-to colors are bright pink (this pair is on my wishlist) or sometimes red. They’re happy colors!

Add textures and patterns

Neutral outfits don’t have to be boring! By adding some texture or pattern to the outfit, you can add some dimension to the look. What do I mean by texture? Think suede, tweed (a personal favorite), leather, velvet or sherpa. Any of those materials will add some visual appeal!

When it comes to patterns, I love houndstooth, fishbone, stripes, and leopard print! They’re all classic and can be found in neutral versions. This blazer is stunning and still keeps the look neutral.

Neutral Outfit Ideas

Some of my favorite ways to wear neutrals are below. From styling a monochrome outfit to wearing white jeans or animal print, neural outfits make me so happy!

Winter Neutrals – Faux Fur Coats

One of my all-time favorite photos is full of how to wear neutrals in winter. It’s as easy as throwing on a faux fur coat to level up your neutral style. From beige to taupe or blush, there are always a plethora of options.

Monochromatic Neutral Outfits – White Jeans

A close second to the above, I’m obsessed with a monochromatic neutral outfit! For me, these looks almost always involve white jeans! You can keep it casual with a lace top and sandals in spring or create a workwear look with a double breasted blazer and booties (my code LTD2203 gets you 20% OFF!). I love the selection at Shopbop because they carry all my fav brands like Agolde, Citizens of Humanity and more. For an affordable pair – try Everlane!

Leopard Print

No one can argue with me that leopard print is one of the best ways to wear neutrals. It’s a classic! The dress above is by Ganni from a few years ago and sold out. But, this one is very similar! I’ve paid my look with simple black boots and a black leather jacket to complete the outfit.

Camel Blazer

Every woman needs a camel colored blazer in her closet! It’s a perfect neutral wardrobe staple. People rave about the one from JCrew (myself included). But, I love all the neutral blazers from L’Agence too. Pair your blazer with a simple tee (my go-to are the ones from Z Supply or Rag & Bone) and a pair of black jeans.

There are so many ways to wear neutrals! The list doesn’t stop here, but white jeans, monochromatic looks, leopard print and a great camel blazer are my personal preferences.
