12 Spring Wardrobe Essentials

Spring is often a season that most of us look forward to because we’re tired of piling on the layers in winter. But, with temperature swings that requires a beanie in the morning and then a warm midday sun that has you wishing you wore shorts, spring can also be a hard season to dress for. The easiest way to prepare for that is to stock your closet with a set of spring wardrobe essentials. A simple shirt dress followed by either a light jacket or a pullover sweatshirt (loving this one) and a classic pair of comfy sneakers are must haves. From there, you can add some other fun pieces or be bold and try some new spring trends.

Spring Wardrobe Essentials Every Woman Needs

Yea, yea… I mentioned trends. But, you all know I’ll forever stay true to neutrals and a regular set of spring wardrobe essentials. It makes getting dressed easy! In spring I do like to add a bit of color (think blush tones and cornflower blue). Of course, there needs to be some floral prints mixed in too. I shared this floral shirtdress on my Instagram two weeks ago and it was an immediate favorite. It’s time to clean your closet and shop for the new season. I’ll show you where to start.

Must Have Spring Essentials

Getting dressed and putting on clothes should make you feel amazing. As a season, spring is a lot like getting dressed. By definition, spring is about renewal and new beginnings. But, your wardrobe doesn’t need a complete makeover. Hopefully some of these basics are already in your closet and you can just grab a few new things for fabulous spring outfits.

Classic White Shirt

What’s more versatile than a classic white shirt? It can be a button up or a crew neck – it’s a spring wardrobe essential. This staple goes with denim or skirts and pairs with sneaks or your gets dressed up with your sandals. You can also throw it over a swimsuit!

Light Wash Denim

Say goodbye to your dark denim and black jeans when spring rolls around! White jeans are always chic, but in spring they just feel so fresh. My go-to have been a pair from Everlane, but this year I’m coveting a bone-colored pair. I grabbed these from Loft, but also have my eye on these from Rag & Bone.

Denim Shorts

Growing up in Florida, denim shorts run rampant (and very short, I might add). While my short shorts days are behind me, you’ll regularly see me rocking a pair of relaxed shorts with a graphic tee or a classic white shirt if I want to be more put together. Agolde makes my favorites (always living in these), but Citizens of Humanity are another brand I love.

Shirt Dress

A shirt dress is the perfect spring transitional outfit. Layer it with a sweater or vest when it’s colder or wear it by itself as the days get warmer. One of the benefits of a shirt dress is that it can be loose fitting but still be very flattering. It’s also ultra chic and perfect for the office.

White Sneakers

The rise of comfy sneakers the last few years isn’t fading anytime soon. And, they go with everything! While you wait for the snow to clear and spring break weather, put on your kicks. My most worn pairs are my Vejas (currently eyeing these). My love for the brand runs deep, plus they’re ecofriendly! Another favorite are these classic white trainers from Everlane.

Denim Jacket

My light layer of choice in spring is always a denim jacket. I’ve had mine for nearly 10 years and love the fit. There’s a reason the style is brought back year after year! It’s especially chic when worn draped over your shoulders. If mine is out of budget, then opt for the one from Madewell. It’s got incredible reviews!

Block Heeled Sandals

As soon as it’s warm enough, give your toes some freedom and slip on some sandals! While I’ve lived in stilettos for years, block heeled sandals are far more comfortable (my code LTD2203 gets you 20% OFF any of your favs at Marc Fisher). They’ll pair perfectly with your midi and maxi dresses or a fun blouse and pair of denim.

Floral Dress

It isn’t really spring without a floral dress! My closet is full of them and some of my most worn are from LoveShackFancy. They’re pricey, but I reach for them over and over again. In spring try wearing your shorter dressed with a sweater over them and don’t forget your knee high boots. You can transition to ankle booties as it warms up!

Maxi Dress or Midi Dress

Just like a floral dress, a maxi dress or midi dress are spring wardrobe essentials. Personally, I’m more of a midi dress girl myself (sometimes the maxi length can get in the way as you walk). But, this maxi dress from Ba&sh is to die for! Throw on a long cardigan or a chunky sweater with some boots and you’re boho spring style will be on point.

Pullover Sweater

Don’t pack away those sweaters just yet! Better yet, if you don’t have one already, try a half zip pullover sweater for spring. Basically anything from Varley is what I’d recommend. Wear a cami underneath and throw on your white sneakers to complete the laid back look.

Statement Jewelry

I’m a minimalist when it comes to accessories, but I’ve been loving some of the chunkier gold necklaces I’ve been seeing lately. This one is on my wish list and these pearl heart earrings are something you can wear everyday. Then, this bangle is a piece I’ve had for years, but it always makes a statement.

Straw Bag

For the last 5+ years I’ve used my basket bag regularly as a spring essential. But, this year I am loving this raffia bag. It reminds me of Bottega Veneta but at a fraction of the price! Bottega has also made woven bags very popular and this one is under $100!

Your style may change over time (mine certainly did), but having a closet full of wardrobe classics make it easy to put together outfits year after year. These 12 spring wardrobe essentials are can be mixed and matched for endless outfit options. And, you can even throw in a trend or two here or there. I hope my well-curated list of favorites help you find a few of your own!
