Chanel 2.55 Mini Review

For nearly 70 years, Chanel handbags have been a symbol of classic style. For those not as familiar, the brand was founded by Coco Chanel, originally known as Gabrielle Chanel. And for years, Gabrielle worked as a seamstress before branching off to start her own collection. The rest, as they say, is fashion history. Nowadays, certain Chanel handbags can be incredibly difficult to get your hands on. But, the Chanel 2.55 (and it’s smaller size, the mini) are staples for the line. In today’s post I’ll share my candid thoughts on the iconic bag in my Chanel 2.55 mini review.

Chanel 2.55 Mini Review

At just a mere 6 x 7.8 x 2.3 in, the Chanel mini 2.55 handbag is one of the most tried and true tested classic handbags that is still as stylish and elegant as it was when it was released in February 1955 (hence, the 2.55). It’s quickly become one of my most used bags. So, the price per wear is fabulous! Jokes about the cost aside, this style can easily be considered an investment item or an heirloom piece for future family members. The quilted stitching inspired by the equestrian spirit that Gabrielle loved so much is simply timeless.

Designer Handbag: Chanel 2.55 Reissue Mini Bag

You’ll often hear the word “reissue” when it comes to the 2.55. Although this was the first bag with a strap that Coco Chanel designed, the classic flap bags became larger than life when Karl Lagerfeld added the signature double CC lock. Then, in 2005 he “reissued” a recreation of the of the original 2.55 design. From there the term stuck and most 2.55 styles continued to be known as a “reissue.” But, technically it’s just those 2.55’s made in 2005.

A unique detail that makes the 2.55 handbag stand out is the signature chain strap. Where Chanel classic flaps have a piece of leather woven through the strap, there 2.55 has an interlocking hardware comprised of flat metal links. To me, it makes this bag just a bit more glam. Plus, it’s a long strap! Anyone with a family will be happy to know that this bag can be worn crossbody. Going hands-free can never be underrated.

The bag is made in a versatile rectangle shape that provides enough space for even the largest iPhone (I currently use the 12 Plus), as well as essential makeup items and a small wallet. Pricing-wise, the cost starts at $3200 and ranges upwards of $4000 (or more on re-seller sites like Fashionphile, Rebag or the Real Real). But, it really depends on your leather and detailing. Those factors influence the price the most.

Chanel Mini Reissue 2.55 Features

“Mademoiselle” Turnlock

Aside from the gorgeous chain strap, the Chanel 2.55 bag also features a very different turnlock. You likely know the classic flaps interlocking CC clasp introduced in the 80’s. But, the design of the 2.55 bag still uses the original clasp by Coco Chanel known as the “Mademoiselle” since she never married.

Chanel Bag Material and Leather Options

Like other Chanel bags, the Chanel 2.55 mini comes in a handful of material and leather options. The lambskin leather is the most popular choice. But, while it’s super soft – it can scratch. So, be careful! Because of that, I tend to prefer the caviar leather (which is much harder to come by in the mini size these days). The finish has a bit of shine to it and the leather has a pebbled appearance. My bag is actually blush velvet (similar here in standard size), which I absolutely love! It brings an extra touch of femininity to the style. Another material I love for these small bags are the tweed, metallic and patent leather options! They’re beyond chic.

Chanel 2.55 Hardware

Chanel bags now come in a variety of hardware colors. From shiny gold to matte gold, pale gold to antique gold, shiny silver and so black – there’s something for everyone. Beyond those classic choices, there are also newer hardware and chains with pearls, iridescent details and even enamel. My go-to are the golds, particularly the antique gold or shiny gold.

Is The Chanel Mini Reissue 2.55 Worth It

There’s no question about it in my mind – the Chanel mini reissue 2.55 bag is 100% worth it! In the last 6 months, I’ve reached for this bag more than any other based on its versatility, small size and functionality.

Your outfit options are endless with this bag style. It looks adorable paired with a floral midi dress (as shown above). The bag also works very well with cute mini dresses for spring and summer (anything LoveShackFancy will do, as seen below). Like the bag itself, it also goes with classic looks like a simple tee (my favorite are by Rag & Bone) and your favorite jeans. Right now I’m loving this pair from Agolde (last seen here). Top off with a tweed blazer (Mango has some affordable options) and sneakers for a cooler than cool Parisian vibe. Lastly, anything from Zimmermann looks incredible with the 2.55. I’m eyeing this paisley top!

Perhaps you’re considering the Chanel 2.55 mini as your first Chanel bag? Know that it will be perfect! With it’s smaller size, it never gets too heavy either. You will wear it for years (or decades) to come and possibly consider it one of your best purchases ever.
