5 Trendy Summer Bags

No matter the season, handbags are my favorite fashion accessory. So, when summer rolls around I immediately break out my basket bags and straw bags. But, while those are some of my preferred styles, you’re not limited to just those few. Trendy summer bags can also add interest to your outfit and make you look more put together. Today’s post rounds up my 5 favorite trendy summer bags and styles you can wear to the beach, brunch, a quick grocery store run or on fun weekend trips.

My Must Have Summer Bags

One of my cardinal fashion rules is to invest in a few select pieces versus many. For summer, you don’t have to spend a lot to get something chic. That’s especially true when it comes to a basket bag. So, you can expect to see mine paired with many outfits the next few months! But, it’s also a time my weekender bags get some heavy usage because we love to book trips over long weekends to get away. Those two styles are my must have summer bags and my most used.

Basket Bags

My love for basket bags runs deep! If you’re a longtime reader, you’ll remember when I wore my round basket bag here. They come in virtually every size and various shapes. Some are open at the top while others close or have a clasp. In my opinion, a basket bag is the most versatile of all trendy summer bags. If you just get one bag for summer – this is it.

There are a myriad of options when it comes to basket bags and straw bags. Bembien is a cult favorite brand. But, they can be a bit pricey. Shopbop has a fabulous selection and Etsy carries a ton of similar styles. My most recent basket bag purchase that I’m styling in this post was from a local shop in Asheville (NC). But, this one is very similar! And, I have another I wear all the time (last seen here).

Hat attack makes some affordable styles too. I adore this one! You could wear it with a classic white top and twill shorts or use it with a pretty little white dress to make a date night outfit more fun.

Weekender Bags

In general, long weekends are pretty great. But, in the summer they’re even better because we typically try to plan a quick trip! Instead of packing a suitcase, use a cute weekender bag. I own a bag from Kelly Wynne that I love. But, this one from Calpak and this canvas bag from Paravel are so on trend.

Since you’re likely hopping in the car for a drive with these bags, wear them with something cozy for the trip like a pair of joggers (have these and love them) or a lightweight sweater. Or, dress it up a bit with a flowy midi dress like this one.

Beach bags

The hot summer months are a time when many of us escape to the beach (or, if you’re lucky maybe you take a jaunt over to the Hamptons or Montauk) with our significant others and family. It’s absolutely the case for me. A chic beach bag is a necessity for anyone, but especially moms. Your beach bag becomes a safe spot for your towels, sunscreen, magazines or books. But, it also likely holds snacks for kids, water bottles and other things you need for the full day.

Beach bags are typically more casual. But, I love this elevated woven style. It will look great with your coverup, but also transitions well if you run straight to lunch or dinner. This colorblocked tote bag by Caterina Bertini is another great option and the raffia material gives it a more laid back vibe that will pair well with tank tops and denim shorts.

Bucket bags

Bucket bags had a major moment a few years ago and have stayed in style ever since. This one by Mar y Sol is made of raffia as well which is definitely the most coveted material for this summer. Also, bucket bags typically have longer straps which makes them great to go crossbody.

You can find lots of leather options too. Mansur Gavriel is the most well-known and comes in a ton of colors. I prefer to get something light, like cream or beige, for summer. This trendy summer bag looks very cute with mini dresses and sandals.

Mini bags

The idea of a mini bag seems a bit silly to me. What can you even fit in it!? But, it makes the most sense in summer when I seem to carry the least amount of things. Since I like to invest in bags I’ll keep for years, this one by Tory Burch caught my eye! Of course, the Jacquemus Le Chiquito style is a fun choice too. Mango has a really cute selection too.
